ABOUT US

Capturing Moments.
Creating Connections.

We are a friendly bunch of photographic enthusiasts who meet to learn, enjoy our hobby and to meet like-minded people who share our enthusiasm for photography.

We welcome all levels of photographers who use any type of photography equipment from: - digital cameras, film or mobile phones cameras – it’s the image that counts.

The society is not a teaching organisation, but the advice and help from experienced members are always available. Our programme gives members the chance to learn and improve from the visiting lecturers, judges and members demonstrations.

A Little History

Warrington Photographic Society has been in continuous existence since 1896, making us one of

the oldest photographic societies in the country (and the world).

As a society, we have a unique historical collection of images on (glass) lantern slides dating from the 1890’s up to the 1960’s when glass slide production ceased as more modern 35mm slide material became available.

The collection is a fascinating journey through history and includes a variety of subjects in the North West and throughout the United Kingdom and Europe. Approximately 750 of these images are digitised and available to see here. We are currently working through the digitisation of an additional 300+ slides.

The slides are from around 23 members of the society, many of whom are women.

<More history words needed here (but not too much more!>

As photographic technology has evolved, through film media to digital and mirrorless cameras and now mobile phones, the society’s members have kept pace, with photographs taken now that would have been impossible even 15 years ago. Take a look at our galleries to see the latest.
